“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
Beloved, have you ever paused long enough to truly see what has always been before you? To behold the familiar with fresh wonder, as if for the first time?
Let me tell you a story.
I once watched tourists marvel at the majesty of Mount Kenya—their faces alight with awe. Yet, I had been born and raised in its shadow. How had I never noticed the way the morning sun painted the snow-capped peaks in fiery hues? How had I walked past such glory without truly seeing it?
That day, I learned a profound truth: Familiarity can blind us to beauty, and routine can rob us of revelation.
The Wise Men Who Saw Beyond the Stars
Our text today takes us to a familiar passage—Matthew 2:1-12—where Magi from the East followed a star to worship the newborn King. These were not ordinary men; they were scholars, astronomers, seekers of truth. They studied the skies, interpreted prophecies, and embarked on a journey that would change history.
Yet, here’s what struck me afresh: Their wisdom had limits.
They knew the stars, but they didn’t foresee Herod’s deception. They followed divine signs, yet they needed a dream to redirect them. Even the wisest among us need God’s intervention.
The Danger of Trusting Only What We Know
Herod was cunning. He feigned worship while plotting murder. The Magi, in their noble pursuit, almost became pawns in his scheme. But God spoke—“Do not return to Herod.”
How often do we rely on our own understanding, only to realize too late that we’ve trusted the wrong voices?
- We lean on human wisdom instead of divine guidance.
- We follow familiar paths without asking if God has a new way.
- We assume good intentions in others, forgetting that “the heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).
A Call to Divine Disruption
The Magi didn’t return the way they came. They took a new route—obedient to the unseen hand of God.
What about you?
- Are you stuck in the same cycles, relying on the same methods, expecting different results?
- Have you become so accustomed to the “mountain” in your life that you no longer see its glory?
- Is God whispering, “Don’t go back that way”—urging you to trust Him over your own plans?
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19)
How to See with Fresh Eyes
- Pause and Behold – Like the Magi, stop long enough to truly see what God is revealing.
- Listen for Divine Redirection – The still, small voice may save you from disaster.
- Embrace the Unfamiliar Path – If God says “go another way,” obey without hesitation.
Closing Challenge
The world tells us to trust systems, intellect, and human power. But God says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
Today, I urge you: Look again.
- Look at your faith—not as a routine, but as a living, breathing relationship.
- Look at your struggles—not as obstacles, but as opportunities for God’s glory.
- Look at the familiar—and ask God to reveal what you’ve been missing.
The same God who guided the Magi is guiding you. Will you see with fresh eyes?
“The boat will not sink; it cannot sink when the Master of ocean and earth and sky is in it.” (Ray Stedman)
So, dear friend, step forward in faith. The journey isn’t over—it’s just beginning anew.
Amen.
